Back to School Night
Back to School night is an event each year, held about one week into the school year, where parents spend an evening meeting faculty, staff and teachers, and learning about the school's expectations and teaching curriculum, and visiting each of your child's teachers. You will learn about important events that are applicable to the entire school and to each grade specifically.
|
You will get an opportunity to walk the halls of the school the same way your child does each day as they navigate through their classroom schedule. Your child's teacher explains the goals for the class, shares information about his/her teaching style and methodology, how he/she grades and the requirements for a good grade. You'll find out what supplies your child will need for the year and what projects are coming up.
In addition to hearing from the school administration, you will also have a chance to hear from the school Athletics department about the athletic opportunities, expectations, and procedures including concussion testing and tryout dates for the fall sports.
Several school organizations will briefly present their purposes and how to get involved. You will likely hear from the Parents-Teachers-Students Association (PTSA), Lions' Pride (Athletic Support), and Theater Association of Parents (TAP). There will often be tables setup in the hallways where you can pickup flyers about the organizations, join the membership, and ask questions.

A Back to School Luncheon is held for Howard High teachers and staff, usually about a week before school begins. The PTSA hosts this event and volunteers are needed to help set up for the event (including any decorations), serve, and clean up. Food is either donated, purchased or a combination of the two to feed approximately 190 people. The luncheon takes place in the cafeteria and is served buffet style. It lasts approximately one hour.
The Back to School Luncheon organizers determine a theme and a menu for the event, create a sign-up sheet for food donations and volunteers, and oversee the event. |
